Mpox (Monkeypox) Outbreak 2022: Global
Overview
Since early May 2022, cases of mpox (monkeypox) have been reported from countries where the virus is not endemic.
The current outbreak is caused by a strain known as clade IIb, which is less severe than the strain that causes outbreaks in Africa.
Symptoms
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Blistering rash that progresses to pustules and eventually scabs over
Transmission
Mpox is spread through close contact with an infected person or animal, or by contact with contaminated objects.
The virus can enter the body through broken skin, mucous membranes, or the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Prevention
There are two main ways to prevent mpox:
- Avoid physical contact with infected people or animals.
- Get vaccinated against mpox.
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for mpox, but most people recover within a few weeks.
Treatment may include supportive care, such as pain relievers and fluids, and antiviral medications in severe cases.
Outlook
The mpox outbreak is a serious public health concern, but it is important to remember that the virus is not as severe as the strain that causes outbreaks in Africa.
Most people who get mpox will recover within a few weeks with supportive care.
