Early Life and Career

Alexander Payne was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on February 10, 1961. His parents, Peggy Constantine and George Payne, ran a Greek restaurant. Payne attended Omaha Burke High School and the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied Spanish and film.

Payne began his filmmaking career in the early 1980s with a series of short films. His first feature film, "Citizen Ruth," was released in 1996 and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.
